The energy-saving design of the outer envelope of building glass curtain wall is closely linked by factors such as window opening, orientation, shading and thermal insulation materials, which affect the energy consumption of the building. Xilaya Research Office in Taiwan has studied the peripheral protective structure of office buildings in Taiwan and analyzed the energy consumption of various elements of the building glass curtain wall outer envelope.

The analysis results are as follows:
the window opening rate of the building glass curtain wall is the most important factor for external wall energy conservation, and reducing the window opening area rate is the most important means of energy conservation, However, to reduce the window opening rate, we must also ensure and take into account the appropriate natural lighting and avoid the psychological sense of closure. However, for the glass curtain wall pursuing the transparent effect, the energy-saving requirements can only be achieved by reducing the open window area and strengthening the heat insulation design in the opaque place. External shading and glass shading are the second important factor of external wall energy saving. Both glass material and external shading affect the shading rate, but the effect of external shading such as installing sunshade and sunshade is far greater than that of changing glass material. Reflective glass and heat absorbing glass with high reflectivity can be selected for glass material (reflective glass with too high reflectivity will cause glare pollution), so appropriate reflective glass should be selected. Building orientation factor is the third element of exterior wall energy-saving design (accounting for 13.8%). The large-area glass curtain wall shall be protected from sunlight from the east to the west, and the long direction of the building shall be placed in the north-south direction. The adoption of shading measures is not only a necessary means of energy-saving design of glass curtain wall buildings, but also a necessary means of architectural design of glass curtain wall buildings with high standards.
