The difference between flat glass and float glass

1. The difference in production process

Ordinary flat glass: It is a transparent and colorless flat glass produced by vertical drawing method, flat drawing method, and rolling method through high-temperature melting of raw materials such as quartz stone in a melting furnace.

Float glass: the raw material is melted at a high temperature in the melting furnace, and the molten glass flows continuously from the kiln to and floats on the surface of the molten tin bath. It floats on the surface of the molten tin due to gravity and its own surface tension. Enter the Xu cold trough to make the glass both sides smooth and even, and the ripples disappear. After cooling and hardening, it is separated from the tin bath metal liquid, and then annealed and cut into a transparent colorless flat glass. The glass surface is particularly flat and smooth, the thickness is very uniform, and the optical distortion is small.

2. Different quality grade judgments

Ordinary flat glass: The appearance quality level is judged according to the number of defects such as ribs, bubbles, scratches, sand particles, bumps, and lines. According to the appearance quality, it is divided into four categories: specially selected products, first-class products, second-class products, and foreign products. According to the thickness, there are five kinds of 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6mm, and several kinds of 7, 8, 9, 10, 12mm can also be produced according to the needs.

Float glass: The appearance quality level is judged based on the number of defects such as optical distortion, bubbles, inclusions, scratches, lines, and fog. According to the appearance quality, it is divided into four categories: high-quality products, first-class products, second-class products and qualified products. According to the thickness, it is divided into 9 kinds of 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 19mm.

3. The difference in appearance

Ordinary glass: It is often emerald green without iron removal, fragile, low transparency, and easy to age and deform under rain and exposure. On the side, the object is distorted after reflection, and water-like deformation generally appears.

Float glass: The surface is hard, smooth, and flat, especially when viewed from the side, the color is different from ordinary glass, it is whitish, and the object is not distorted after reflection.

4. The difference in density

The density (specific gravity) of ordinary glass is slightly lower than that of float glass. Therefore, ordinary glass is inferior to float glass in terms of thermal insulation and sound insulation performance.
